This is a story about health from the perspective of Indigenous (Heiltsuk) culture. It is a foundational and personal piece which defines the meaning of culturally safe care and underlines the importance of cultural safety to health, well-being, and healing.
The film is an edit of two interviews interwoven with footage of the interior of the Heiltsuk “big house” in Bella Bella—a cedar longhouse designed and built for community events and ceremonies—the first such structure built in nearly a century after such activities were outlawed by the Canadian government.
This documentary was filmed in the communities of Bella Bella on the unceded and traditional territories of the Heiltsuk peoples.
